The following Kentucky student athletes will be honored by the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation and the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches as the KHSAA Regular Season Stats Leaders for the 2023-2024 basketball season during the upcoming 13th Annual Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards Ceremony presented by the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation on March 17, 2024.

The Seventh Annual Bill “Mr. Wildcat” Keightley Award will be presented to Garrett Stearns from Madison Central High School during the 2024 Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards Ceremony on March 17th at the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott Resort.

Nominations were submitted from across the state for this prestigious award which honors a Kentucky high school senior basketball team manager, who exemplifies the essence of “team player”.  Someone who supports their team with passion, dedication and enthusiasm while also performing well off the court, in the classroom and in the community.

Garrett Stearns, a senior at Madison Central High School said, “When I think of my time as manager with the Madison Central basketball program, there are certain skills that I learned that stand out. The first, and possibly the most important, is how to reflect positivity on others. As human beings, we’re destined to have bad days. This is especially true for a basketball team with a long competitive season. There will be games that are lost, and turnovers that are made. In my role as manager, I’ve taken it upon myself to always keep a positive attitude, and spread it upon others. For me, all it takes is a smile. No matter what position we’re in, I always keep a smile on my face when talking to my teammates. This not only works around the basketball team, but also in the classroom, at home, and out in public. I’ve also learned the skill of taking pride in what you do. On a team, everyone has their own role, and no matter what your role is, you should take pride in it! Whether it’s your defensive ability, or for me, my various duties as manager, it’s a skill that builds confidence, and is something you can apply to anything you do.”

As well as managing for four years, he’s also been an Honors AP student all four years of high school, he was selected as a member of the 43rd annual Kentucky Youth Salute in 2022 and has maintained a 4.162 GPA.  Garrett is also a member of the Madison Central Marching Band, a member of the Madison Central Wind Ensemble, an officer for the Madison Central Madrigals Choir and has completed community service through FCC Richmond Youth Group and is a member of the Madison County Superintendent Teen Task Force.

William “Mr. Wildcat” Bill Keightley played basketball at Kavanaugh High School in Lawrenceburg, KY where he graduated in 1944.  He then attended Eastern Kentucky University until he entered the U.S. Marine Corps to serve his county in World War II.

Mr. Keightley served as the Equipment Manager for the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team from 1962 until his death in 2008.  He served under coaches Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, Eddie Sutton, Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith, and Billy Gillespie.  Keightley was part of three NCAA Championship teams and 12 South Eastern Conference Championship teams in his 46 years of tenure.

The Eleventh Annual Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones Award will be presented to Brady Hussey from Covington Catholic High School during the 2024 Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards Ceremony on March 17^th at the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott Resort.

Nominees were submitted from across the state to the Jones family for this prestigious award for senior multi-sport athletes who excel equally in their classroom and contribute greatly to their community.” All of the nominees were very deserving, and this is always a difficult decision make each year,” said Wallace “Wah” Jones, Jr.

Brady, a senior at Covington Catholic has played basketball and tennis during his high school career, while maintaining a 3.5 GPA. As a guard, Brady has been averaging 14 points per game and 4 rebounds per game while shooting an 86% average from the free throw line. As a junior, Brady was named to the 2023 Northern Kentucky All-Star Team and was a member of the 2022 KHSAA Sweet 16 All-Tournament Team as a sophomore.

On the tennis court for the Colonels, Brady was the number 1 singles player on last season’s state championship-winning tennis team. He was also named 9th Region Player of the Year (2021, 2022 & 2023), 1st Team All State (2022 & 2023) and 1st Team All Region (2022 & 2023). Brady is the only one in school history to receive all-state recognition in basketball and tennis in the same academic year.

Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones, Sr. was a two-sport All-American at the University of Kentucky, playing for legendary coaches Adolph Rupp and Bear Bryant, winning two national championships and an NIT.  Jones is the only player at the University of Kentucky to have his jerseys retired in both sports.

In addition to basketball and football, Jones was a pitcher with the Wildcats and a member of the UK track and field team.  He won a gold medal in the 1948 Summer Olympics with Rupp’s “Fabulous Five” and the Phillip 66ers.  After college Jones went on to play in the National Basketball Association with the Indianapolis Olympians. During his tremendous athletic career Jones was the image of sportsmanship and is respected throughout the world.

The Tenth Annual Donna L.J. Murphy Award will be presented to Laken Williams of Martin County during the 2024 Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards Ceremony on March 17th at the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott Resort.

Nominations were submitted from across the state for this prestigious award which honors a standout female senior basketball player who exemplifies the meaning of being a great student athlete.  “Each year I am reminded of the great talent and character that Kentucky has in our girls’ basketball programs!  So many of the ladies who were nominated have had some great accomplishments in their high school basketball career and this decision is always very difficult.” said Donna Murphy.

Laken Williams, a distinguished senior at Martin County, exemplifies excellence both on and off the basketball court. With four years of varsity basketball under her belt, Laken is a member of the 2000 point club at Martin County High and also maintains an impressive 3.96 GPA.

Throughout her high school career, Laken has been a pivotal player in the success of the Lady Cardinals basketball team. She contributed to back-to-back 57th District Championship victories in 2022 and 2023 and has garnered numerous accolades, including selections to the WYMT All Tournament Team in 2020 and 2023, as well as the 15th Region Coaches Association All-Region team in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

In addition to her on-court achievements, Laken has received various MVP awards, including tournaments such as the Marshall County Hoop Fest, the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic, and the Smoky Mountain Classic. Her exceptional performance has also been acknowledged being named the Buckeye Elite MVP and Donna Murphy Classic two time player of the game awards, as well as the Lexington Christian Jim Rose Classic, where she earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Looking ahead, Laken has committed to playing basketball for Morehead State University in the upcoming 2024-2025 season. With over 500 career assists for the Lady Cardinals, Laken’s dedication to her team has been instrumental in achieving an impressive 80-32 record over her four-year career.

Beyond her athletic endeavors, Laken is actively engaged in various extracurricular activities and community service projects. She is a proud member of the BETA Club and Travel Club, participates in the JAG Program, and contributes her time to the Yearbook team. Additionally, she has been involved in numerous community service initiatives, including those with local churches and the Martin County Hoops League, where she mentors youth through basketball camps and individual lessons.

Reflecting on her experiences, Laken acknowledges the invaluable lessons she has learned through basketball, including discipline, teamwork, adaptability, time management, and sportsmanship. As she looks toward the future, she is eager to apply these skills to her career, aspiring to make positive contributions to any team or community she joins.

Donna L.J. Murphy played basketball at Newport High School from 1972-76 and went on to become an All-American.  During her senior year she was named Kentucky’s first Miss Basketball in 1976, averaging 35 points and 20 rebounds.  She was awarded the Ted Sanford Award for being named the MVP of the 1975 Kentucky state tournament after she scored 67 points and grabbed 50 rebounds in two games.

More than a great high school basketball player, Murphy was also the State AA high jump champion in 1974 and named All-region in volleyball before graduating fifth in her class. As a highly recruited student-athlete, she chose to attend Morehead State University and graduated magna cum laude twice, with a BA in Communications/ Journalism with Teacher Certification, and a MHE in Counseling.

Murphy remains a highly decorated high school and college student-athlete and a member of eleven Hall of Fames, including the Kentucky Basketball Hall of Fame. Murphy was also the first female student-athlete to have her jersey retired at Morehead State University and Newport High School. She was the first forward drafted in the Women’s Professional Basketball League in 1980 and went on to play for the St. Louis Streak.  After her playing career she transitioned to coaching. She has held coaching positions at the collegiate level and also coached Pro-Am, high school, middle school, AAU and Exposure basketball. Murphy is now retired after many years working as a Professor and Counselor at Bluegrass Community and Technical College, overseeing the Diversity Outreach Services and Intramural Sports.  In her free time, she is a basketball skills trainer.
